How do you calculate the selling price of a product?

Selling price = total cost per unit ÷ (1 − margin − fees), then add sales tax. Cost per unit includes materials, your labor, packaging and shipping, and a share of your monthly fixed costs. Example: if one unit costs you $10 to make and you want a 40% margin with no fees, the price is $10 ÷ 0.60 = $16.67 before tax.

  1. Divide what you spend on batch materials by the units it makes.
  2. Add your time (hours × hourly rate), packaging, shipping and fixed costs per unit.
  3. Pick your margin and apply the formula with your payment fees.
  4. Add sales tax and round up.

How it works

  1. Add up materials per unit

Enter what you spend on supplies for a batch and how many units it makes. If you resell, enter what you pay your supplier.

  2. Put a value on your time

Work hours per batch × your hourly rate. Not sure? Divide what you want to earn per month by your monthly work hours.

  3. Add packaging, shipping and fixed costs

Packaging and shipping per unit, plus monthly fixed costs spread across the units you sell each month.

  4. Choose margin, fees and tax

Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin − fees). Then sales tax is added and the price is rounded up, to .99 or a whole number.

  5. Compare and save

Try your competitor’s price to see what you would make, check your break-even and save the product to your list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for selling price?

Price before tax = total cost per unit ÷ (1 − margin − fees). Then you add sales tax. Precio Justo runs the math with all your costs and rounds up so your profit never drops.

What profit margin should I use?

It depends on your industry, but many handmade products work with a 40% to 60% margin on the selling price; resale is often 20% to 35%. The app shows the price at different margins so you can decide with data.

Are margin and markup the same?

No. Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is what you add on top of cost. A 50% margin equals a 100% markup. Precio Justo shows both and converts one into the other.

How do I include fixed costs?

Enter what you pay each month (rent, internet, utilities, ads, apps) and how many units you sell per month. The app spreads that cost across each unit.

How do I work out my hourly rate?

Divide what you want to earn per month by the hours you work per month. For example, $2,500 ÷ 120 hours = $20.83 per hour. The app has a helper that does it for you.

What is the break-even point?

The number of units you need to sell per month to cover your fixed costs. Beyond that, every sale is profit.

Does it work for services?

Yes. For services, use work hours as the main cost and leave materials at zero, or enter what you spend on travel and supplies.
